Buxton to B.N. Cleghorn, about his previous application to Glenelg to appoint him Governor of the Island, the appointment of Longley to the post, his subsequent death, and his own immediate recommendation of Cleghorn to Glenelg, about which he had heard nothing, 25 Oct 1838
He comments on what a wise move it would be for Glenelg to appoint someone of Cleghorn's race to the post, though he doubted he had the courage to do so; he was therefore reluctant to do anything to rouse his hopes. He asks him to report on how emancipation was proceeding and on any information he might have on the slave trade, so that he might incorporate it into a book he was writing. (Copy.)
