He was optimistic about the scheme but reluctant to commit himself as to the ease with which capital for the venture might be obtained. He had received further information that the enslaved people were being brought down the Niger River and believed that if the river could be sealed to war canoes and the indigenous people convinced that they could obtain more European goods by agriculture than by the slave trade, the trade could be wiped out from the Niger delta and a good deal of the coastline. He mentions information received that day that the French, by way of treaties and gifts, had established a safe trade from Senegal to Galam. (Copy.)
