Buxton to John Jeremie, about the approaches he had made to Hobhouse to get Jeremie transferred to India and Hobhouses's inquiries as to his qualifications, about which he had consulted Lushington and was now asking him to let him know as soon as possible whether he himself thought he was sufficiently versed in English law for such a post, 24 Aug 1838
He also describes his work on the slave trade, its circulation to the Cabinet only because publicity then would defeat its end, though he was sending him a copy, and asks his opinion on it. He writes of his intention to publish it on 1 Jan 1839 and asks him whether he had sufficient health and vigour to act as Governor-General of Africa if the government should act upon his suggestion. He reports Lushington's intention to raise the matter of slavery in India in the House during the next session, asking Jeremie whether he thought it would be right for him to relinquish the task of suppressing slavery there to take up the African cause he had proposed, suggesting that India might be the station in which he could do most good, and warning that it was not very likely that the government would allow him to choose a Governor-General for Africa. An annotation refers to Mr Buxton's private letters. (Copy.)
