Buxton to Andrew and Priscilla Johnston, about his book having been printed and his general satisfaction with it, 14 Aug 1838
He had delivered inscribed copies to the Admiralty and to Lords John Russell, Melbourne, Glenelg, Grey, and Howick, to Hobhouse and Gordon, Lord Palmerston, Stanley, Thompson, and Porter, James Stephen, and Spring Rice, and asked the last to deliver Lord Lansdowne's, Cotman's, and Duncannon's copies. He recounts the conversation he had had at each place, including Spring Rice's promise to make the rest of the Cabinet read it. He mentions a meeting with McQueen, who had a scheme for the Joint Stock Company to hire slave labour from African princes and his own refusal to become a director of the company if any such scheme were to be entertained. Finally, he records his satisfaction at having ended his work for the session and the way his thoughts were then turning towards Northrepps, Felthorpe, and shooting, his expectation that in a fortnight he would be as much occupied with rabbits as he had been with Black people and Fernando Po (Bioko), his itinerary for the next few days, and the progress of his grandchildren Andrew and Tommy.
