He rejoiced that no act of violence, as far as he knew, had been offered to a white man by a Black person during the period of apprenticeship, and that in little more than twenty-four hours, Black people would be free. He also mentions the need to remember that there would be many attempts to curtail the freedom of free Black people in the future, that they would still need education and protection, and that the slave trade still existed.
