Anna Gurney at the Hotel de Bristol, Paris, to Isambert, in French, about the interesting papers that he had given them, her plea to Buxton to procure for Isambert information on imports and exports of British colonies for 1834, 24 Jun 1838
Also about her belief that things were going well in the colonies and that land values had risen in Jamaica. She observes that, at the end of Isambert's lecture, M. de las Cases had said that the French colonies would submit to the abolition of slavery if a form of vagrant legislation were introduced, and comments that this was the very move that Buxton feared for British colonies as it would reduce apprentices to a new form of slavery following the abolition of the apprenticeship system. To illustrate her point, she cites what had happened to the Khoekhoe people in the Cape of Good Hope when they had been deprived by the Pass Laws of the ability to sell their labour in the best market, and the improvement in their situation when the laws had been revoked by Sir Richard Bourke [Lieutenant-Governor of the Eastern Region of the Cape of Good Hope (1825-1828)], through an Order in Council that prohibited any changes to Ordinance 50 being changed in any way. She refers to Dr Philip's book on Africa and offers to make extracts from his evidence for the Aborigines Report on her return to England, though she had already provided him with a copy of the report where that evidence was presented. She indicates other parts of the report that would be useful to him in the struggle he was facing and offers to procure for him any documents he needed. She informs him that they would be leaving for home the following Tuesday. (Copy.)
