Andrew Johnston to Anna Gurney, about the meeting he and Buxton had had with Laird, Becroft, McLean, and Forster, the account of Becroft's expedition up the River Niger, the information he was able to supply on Fernando Po (Bioko), Buxton's ordering of groundnut cake for H. Johnson, and the meeting they had had the previous day with two African skippers who provided them with important information, 23 May 1838
He writes of Buxton dining with Lushington and attending the Debate on Sir Eardley Wilmot's motion, and the unexpected division and defeat of the government. He quotes Buxton's views that the abolitionists should insist on the government bringing in a Bill, not moving it themselves. Finally, he mentions Buxton and his friends being turned out of the Lobby of the House of Commons the previous night, after the debate, because they were so noisy. (Copy.)
