He describes his interview with Spring Rice, at which the latter asked for a good plan for dealing with the slave trade and his own insistence that if he drew up such a plan the relevant member of the government should read it in his presence. Rice had agreed to do this during the Easter holiday. He pays tribute to the part she would have to play in drawing up such a plan for establishing commercial links with Africa and describes a dinner attended by himself and Andrew at which they discussed such matters with William Allen, the Governor of the Cape Coast, McLean, an African merchant, Hutton, and the Governor of Fernando Po (Bioko), Col. Nicholls. He refers to information on possible African commerce that he was sending her. An annotation refers to Andrew Johnston's informing her of an engagement to meet African merchants on 24 Apr, and referring her to Golberry's work on African commerce; also to Letter Case No. 384.
