He gives his reasons for not joining them in their campaign, and acknowledges that the course of events had not fulfilled his apprehensions, that he had miscalculated the difficulties in their way, that he now believed that, following the overwhelming demonstration of public feeling against apprenticeship in Britain, the plantation owners would not be able to act against the interests of Black people at the end of apprenticeship, while warning that there was a danger of disappointing Black people's high expectations. Finally, he acknowledges that he had changed his opinions on having been proved wrong, and that he would take great delight in their success, although he could claim no credit.
