He mentions handing Jeremie's letter on the enlistment of free labourers as enslaved people for life to Sir George Grey, who had passed it on to James Stephen so that action might be taken should legislation relevant to it be under review. He asks him to keep a watch on legislation and to inform him when anything of the kind was likely to occur. He also mentions having handed to Lushington the letter about Jeremie's judgement; he was very interested in it but occupied by his personal troubles, being anxious at that moment to leave Parliament though Buxton doubted that in the long run he would do so. He rejoices at leaving Parliament himself. He reports on the health and well-being of his family and his second son's imminent departure from home to be coached by a clergyman for entry to Cambridge. He comments on the mishandling of the suppression of the slave trade and his own solution of appealing to self-interest to get it stopped. He reports on the progress of the apprenticeship question and his hope that the other faction might be more successful than he expected, without damaging the prospects for Black people in 1840. He asks for information on slavery in India and for his opinion on the slave trade question. He discourses on the blessings ensuing from a true knowledge of Christ, and inquires into the state of health of Jeremie and his wife and daughter. He warns Jeremie that he would be named as their African Governor if ever their scheme came to fruition and adds that he was sending him, in addition to his letter to the Delegates, a copy of the letter he had addressed to Spring Rice on slavery in India, an analysis of his argument concerning the slave trade, a list of questions relating to Veddahs, on which he needed answers, and some papers reporting on the activities of Lord Brougham, who seemed to have reverted to his former self.
