Lushington to Buxton, about the proposition he had made to him [about taking over his Parliamentary seat], explaining that since his wife's death he could take no interest in anything but caring for the interests of his children, maintaining that the Tories were hostile to him and that, unless he had resumed attendance in the House by 1 Feb, he would be ousted from his seat, 23 Dec 1837
He would be delighted if Buxton were to be his successor but begs him to disregard all he had said if a return to Parliament would injure his health. He mentions Sturge's book and criticises him for placing too much reliance on hearsay evidence. (Copy.)
