He records his low opinion of American democracy on observing acts that would not be tolerated in England and his view that democracy was no good unless it was also a theocracy. He writes of the impending decision on the incorporation of Texas in the Union, the result of which would be to add six or seven slave states to it and open an unlimited market for enslaved people from the Southern states and from Africa. He offers as proof that true religion was working there the concern of the Friends in Indiana about the education of indigenous Americans and the anti-slavery movement among the Friends, and grieves that they could not yet see their way clear to joining with others in that cause because of the violence of the anti-slavery party there and the Friends' opposition to Jackson's and Van Buren's government. He describes his journey to Virginia and the enslaved people he had seen en route, recounts what he had heard of the flogging of the enslaved people, and claims that, though their general appearance was not one of misery, great cruelties were at times practised upon them.
