W.E. Gladstone to Buxton, 26 Sep 1837
About the table of punishments in the Patriot and the decrease in punishments since the ending of slavery, giving the details in his possession. He thanks Buxton for his well-meant criticism and expresses his willingness to take note of any others he might make of his conduct. He refers him to a book by Laird and Oldfield, observing that all the serving officers in the navy shared his view that the slave trade ought to be declared piracy.
