He comments on the replacement of Lord Sligo by Sir Lionel Smith, whom he suspects of being in the hands of the plantation owners, the expected return of Sturge and Scoble from the West Indies with a large amount of evidence, and the comfort he derived from the knowledge that it could only last another three years. He writes of two teachers sent by the Mico Charity to Mauritius and his own pleasure on hearing in what affection he was held there. He quotes a paragraph from Tom Macaulay's letter to his father (see pp. 248-251). He hopes to spend part of the next session on a slave trade committee. He refers to some matters of business he was attending to on Jeremie's behalf, and the political games being played in Parliament over the Irish Municipal Bill and the Irish Tithes. He claims he would feel great satisfaction upon retirement if the questions concerning indigenous peoples, the apprenticeship scheme, the foreign slave trade, and slavery in India had been settled or were on their way to being so. He inquires about the health of Jeremie's wife and daughter, mentions meeting the father of the man Jeremie's daughter was to marry, comments on the fact that McKenzie was to be the next Governor of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and records his high opinion of Mrs McKenzie, noting that Miss Rice was to accompany them.
