- the dissatisfaction expressed by the more enthusiastic members of their faction at the mild tone of his latest Reporter and with the results of Buxton's Committee
- his belief that the position in France had been improved by the recent change in the Ministry
- his satisfaction at the news of the Xhosa people and his son Tom's intention to do what he could concerning East Indian slavery
- a postscript by Selina Macaulay, to whom the letter had been dictated, describes her father's state of health.
