Stephen Lushington to Buxton, about the repeal of the Consolidation Slave Law by the Abolition of Slavery Act and the prosecution of the D'Epinays, 9 Dec 1835
He discusses the proposed Acts against vagrancy in Mauritius and the decision of the Commissioners there to pay compensation even without proof that the enslaved people had been registered. He reports on a fruitless visit to the Colonial Office, the failure of Jeremie's claim for compensation, and his own exasperation at the apprenticeship system.
