Buxton to Priscilla Buxton at Wallington, about the satisfactory state of the national budget and Stanley's assurance that emancipation could be paid for without inconvenience to the country and his need to discuss the education of Black people with him, 11 Feb 1834
He reports John Smith's change of views over emancipation being the ruin of the West Indian proprietors since property had increased in value and trade was improving (see p. 46). He describes dinner with the Rothschilds and recounts the story of Nathaniel Rothschild's acquisition of wealth. Finally, he records his morning's visits to the Treasury about the Baptist chapels, the Colonial Office about the frontier [in South Africa], the Home Office, the Board of Trade, and other departments about several other matters.
