- folder 1 (fols. 1-88) notes on Northern Nigeria, indirect rule, Lugard's relations with Joseph Chamberlain, and other matters related to his actions in Nigeria, 1897-1906
- folder 2 (fols. 1-100) notes taken from Hansard on debates and questions put in both Houses of Parliament on Nigeria and Lugard's actions there, 1897-1908
- folder 3 (fols. 1-22) notes on parliamentary debates, the papers of the Royal Niger Company, Heinrich Barth's Travels and Discoveries in North and Central Africa, and correspondence with E.G. King, who had been on Lugard's staff, and with David Muffett when he was writing Concerning Brave Captains; also, a section of Lady Lugard's sketch of this part of her husband's career, 1897-1960
- folder 4 (fols. 1-20) notes on 1898-1904 compiled by Margery Perham and her assistant from The Times, the treaty made with Boussa, from the diary of Captain the Honourable R.F. Somerset (West African Frontier Force, 1898-1899) and from Sir Henry Gollan's reminiscences of 1900-1904 when he was Lugard's private Secretary and later attorney-general, gained during an interview with him in 1945
- folder 5 (fols. 1-243) notes from the Colonial Office records, chiefly of the despatches to and from Lugard, 1898-1906
- folder 6 (fols. 1-2) memorandum on 'General Policy to be pursued in N.N.' written by Lugard on his appointment to Northern Nigeria in 1900
- folder 7 (fols. 1-15) direction from Lugard to H.S. Goldsmith about the Sokoto expedition, with two letters from Goldsmith to his sister describing it, 1906; these letters were sent by Mrs Goldsmith to Margery Perham
- folder 8 (fols. 1-30) More general notes on Lugard's marriage, financial position, and attitudes towards such matters as slavery, n.d.
- folder 9 (fols. 1-5) translation by L.C.J. Hanson-Smith of 'A personal account of the capture of Sokoto by the British as related by M. Umaru Nagwammatse', 1945
- folder 10 (fols. 1-17) correspondence with Lord Scarborough about his uncle's papers and the references in them to Goldie and his relationship with Flora Shaw; also, correspondence with Sir William Gowers about the incident at Satiru, with a note from Blunt's diaries on the raid on Kano and Sokoto and a letter from John Flint, 1950-1958.
