folder 1 (item 1) notebook containing Lady Lugard's notes on the family and early life of her husband, with a sketch of his career up to 1914, c. 1926
folder 2 (fols. 1-26) notes by Lady Lugard on his early life, recast and extended by her husband and his brother, n.d., and transcribed by the latter in 1946
folder 3 (fols. 1-30) extracts from the first volume of a diary begun while Lugard was in Nyasaland (Malawi), made and marked by his brother in 1953, before burning the volume; also, correspondence between Lugard and his uncle, Sir Edward Lugard, who, disapproving of his going to Nyasaland (Malawi), urged him to return and resume his military career in England, later congratulating him on his CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire), 1888-1896
folder 4 (fols. 1-15) memoranda by Lugard and by his brother on his infatuation with the divorced wife of a colonel in India; also, appreciations of Lugard's character in general. These were prepared by them for use by Margery Perham as the official biographer and were intended to be burnt after she had used them, 1938-1941
folder 5 (fols. 1-57) notes by Margery Perham on the layout of the proposed biography and on details for Part I of volume one, dealing with his early life, with related letters from his brother and a friend, n.d.
