This section consists of material derived from Margery Perham's study of general colonial policy and specific aspects such as indirect rule and international accountability. The divisions in subject matter of the papers, and the present arrangement of the boxes, reflect Margery Perham's views on the various topics of colonial policy and their relationship to each other. The box arrangement is, therefore, not chronological but follows the sequence of her study of colonial policy and the development of her ideas. Within the boxes, the date sequence of folders indicates when she first became interested in a particular subject, began making notes and collecting material, and the subsequent development of that study. MSS. Perham 683-687 contain material illustrating official British colonial policy, the contributions of experts, advisers, and political parties to its development, and summaries of that policy issued by the Colonial Office. The second sub-section, MSS. Perham 688-694, covers the post-Lugard history of the theory of indirect rule, the emergence of development policy - economic, social, and political - the growth of demands both for international accountability and for a regional restructuring of the British Commonwealth, and, ultimately, the post-World War II concern with constitutional reform and the welfare and defence of colonial peoples. The third sub-section, MSS. Perham 695-701, consists of material on concepts of and attitudes towards imperialism, both outside and within the Commonwealth. As in other parts of this collection, the last four boxes contain related printed material.
