This section is concerned with Margery Perham's involvement with Colonial/Commonwealth Studies in Oxford and in other centres and institutions in Britain. It begins with two boxes of papers on her direction of such studies both in the Institute of Colonial Studies in Oxford and at Nuffield College. MSS. Perham 257-262 hold material connected with her inspiration of and chairmanship of the Oxford Colonial Records Project which, from 1963 to 1972, carried out a programme of search and retrieval of records, chiefly personal papers, which might otherwise have been lost or destroyed during the period of decolonisation. Some of these derive from her own interviews of former colonial governors, as part of the oral history programme introduced by the project's director, Jack Tawney. There are three boxes of correspondence with colleagues and students, MSS. Perham 263-265, followed by one of more general material on the state of and facilities for Commonwealth Studies in Oxford from 1948 to 1979. Margery Perham attended numerous conferences on colonial studies; papers from some major conferences can be found in MSS. Perham 267-269, though many other conferences are represented in other sections of this collection. Notes and press cuttings on the Colonial Office and official statements on constitutional affairs, together with seminar papers, can be found in the next two boxes, while the last five in this section hold the bibliographies and chronologies compiled by Margery Perham and her assistants for her teaching and writing on colonial affairs.
