The majority of the twenty-eight boxes in this section hold the travel diaries that Margery Perham wrote in the form of letters to her sister, Ethel Rayne, with the intention of them being transcribed and circulated to the rest of the family and some of their friends while she was abroad. Some of these she later revised and prepared for publication, a task which A.H.M. Kirk-Greene has continued since her death. The first box, however, holds an incomplete series of conventional pocket diaries bearing very little more than notes of appointments or the occasional address. In the next box are some fragmentary observations on life in general, religion, and the inner life. The period of her first visit to Africa, to Somaliland, is covered in MSS. Perham 34, and that of her Rhodes Trust Travelling Fellowship in MSS. Perham 35-44. Wherever possible, in describing this material references have been given to the corresponding pages in the published versions, African Apprenticeship, Faber & Faber, 1974, and East African Journey, Faber & Faber, 1976. Photographs illustrating these travels can be found in MSS. Perham 751 for Somaliland, MSS. Perham 757 for America, the Pacific Islands and the Antipodes, and MSS. Perham 753-755 for South and East Africa. It has not been possible to include page references to the text of Pacific Prelude [because it was not published until 1988, postdating this catalogue]. MSS. Perham 45 holds material restored to the collection in 1984 by J.H.M. Beattie of Linacre College, Oxford, who had been lent the material some years before for use in his studies. It consists of diaries kept by Margery Perham's African servants who had accompanied her on her travels in East and West Africa, with brief accounts of their subsequent lives. Her journey in West Africa gathering material for her book, Native Administration in Nigeria, Oxford University Press, 1937, is similarly recorded in the papers in MSS. Perham 46-48. These too have been related to the text of West African Passage, published posthumously by Peter Owen in 1983. Relevant photographs can be found in MSS. Perham 752. The remainder of this section consists of rather similar material recording visits to Africa, the West Indies, and European countries, arranged chronologically and according to territory.
