Card register of University medical students, 1884-1997
This card register comprises the University medical students register (from 1932) and the register of clinical students (i.e. both preclinical and clinical students). It includes students who have been both preclinical and clinical students at Oxford; those who have only been pre-clinical students; and those who have only been clinical students at Oxford (i.e. who have done their preclinical study elsewhere). For preclinical students who did their clinical study elsewhere, the card gives details of qualifications awarded by other institutions. The cards include the following personal information: name, college, address, school, date of birth, nationality, degrees conferred, hospital, examinations passed, date of matriculation, date of entry to the Medical School, and date registered with the General Medical Council. Some cards have photographs of the student attached. Some are annotated with information concerning the student's later life or career. It is not clear why the cards here date from 1932 rather than from the establishment of the register in 1913. It is perhaps because a new (larger) style of record card was introduced at this time replacing the older (smaller) style record cards as used in MSS. University Archives ME 31-32.

Biographical / Historical
The requirement to establish and maintain a medical students' register first appears in the Statutes of 1913 (Tit V.xi.7). The Medicine Faculty Board was to establish a University Medical Students' Register i.e. a register of members of the University engaged in the study of medicine at Oxford with a view to obtaining a qualification to practise. Responsibility for maintenance of the register lay with the Faculty Board until 1924 when, following the creation of the post, it passed to the Dean of the Medical School as the responsible officer. In 1949, responsibility transferred to the newly-created post of Secretary of the Medical School. In the Statutes for 1965 there appears for the first time the requirement for the Medicine Faculty Board to maintain a register of students admitted to work in Oxford for the Second Examination for the Degree of BM or other qualifying medical examinations (i.e. clinical students). From 1974, the University Medical Students' Register became the joint responsibility of the Clinical Medicine and Physiological Sciences Faculty Boards. The Clinical Medicine Faculty Board also became responsible for maintaining the register of clinical students. In 2000, responsibility for the maintenance of both registers was transferred to the Medical Sciences Divisional Board (see Council Regulation 17, 2002, sections 5-6).
