Correspondence between Professor Reginald Coupland and Oldham about the Hilton Young Commission and Report and its consequences. They discuss:

  1. (fols. 8-29, 37, and 42) a meeting of the Ralegh Club in Oxford in Feb 1929, at which the Report was debated, the attitudes of Lionel Curtis and Norman Leys and others, subsequent action by Coupland and Oldham, including the latter's letter to The Times of Feb 1929, and the pressure they brought to bear on the new Secretary of State for the Colonies, Sidney Webb
  2. (fols. 28-29) possible support from the work of Bronislaw Malinowski
  3. (fols. 23-25, 88) Eric Dutton's opposition
  4. (fol. 30) the House of Lords Debate
  5. (fols. 36-40) the Student Christian Movement pamphlet
  6. (fols. 38-39) Feetham's Round Table article
  7. (fol. 47) Webb's submission to the Cabinet of proposals based on Wilson's Report, their discussion of countermeasures with Gilbert Murray, A.D. Lindsay, and H.A.L. Fisher in Oct 1929, and the enrolment of the Archbishop of Canterbury in their campaign
  8. (fols. 59-87) the Joint Select Committee, the selection of its chairman and its possible achievements
  9. (fol. 89) the conference in Oxford in Nov 1929 to determine how the University might contribute to the study of African problems
  10. (fols. 90-100) the selection of Lord Hailey to direct the African Survey
  11. (fols. 96-100) demands of the Kenya settlers in 1933.

Lugard's opinions are referred to throughout this correspondence on their campaign.
