- (fols. 5-37) correspondence between Oldham and Hailey about creating an advisory committee for the Survey, obtaining advice from a wider range of experts, other possible sources of information, the problems to be examined, and the preparatory work to be completed before Hailey returned from India, 13 Jun 1933-13 Jan 1937. They also discuss: a conference between Lord Lugard, Sir Robert Hamilton, Margery Perham, and Oldham on the line to be taken in the 1934 Colonial Supply Debate on the Morris Carter Report on Land Tenure in Kenya (fols. 20-26) [see IMC Box 236]; Hailey's views on the report and on settler opinion in Kenya concerning linking up with South Africa (fols. 28-31); and the affairs of the African Institute and the part played by missionaries in education (fols. 31-37)

- (fols. 83-84) correspondence between Hailey and Lord Lothian about the delayed departure of Hailey from India and his offer, refused, to stand down from the proposed directorship of the Survey so that a more immediately available man might take over, 10 Apr-16 May 1934
- (fols. 94-95) Coupland to Hailey about his proposed three-year scheme of research to be directed by the Social Studies Research Committee of Oxford University and to cover a geographical survey, an historical summary, a study of economic and financial development by Dr Leubuscher, a social anthropological survey by Evans Pritchard, and a study of native administration by Margery Perham, none of which was expected to overlap with Hailey's work, 13 Mar 1936
