These 14 folders contain letters written by Lethem to his mother from Nigeria, from the time he went out on his first tour in 1911 to his departure for leave in 1928. There are two or three letters to his sister Christobel in the files and, from 1923, there are occasional letters from his wife to her mother-in-law. They give a clear picture of the life of a District Officer and resident in Northern Nigeria at this time and cover many of the political questions, such as the war in the Cameroons (Republic of Cameroon), the results of the German administration of Dikwa, Lugard's Durbar at Kaduna in 1913, and the Mahdist influence in Nigeria. In the following list, the main places from which Lethem wrote are shown for each folder.
