A dedication in verse to K. Charles is prefixed, followed by an address by the author to his book, also in verse; by a preface in prose (dated 31 March, 1629) to four sorts of readers, viz. ministers of the church of England, moderate Protestants, zealous Puritans, and afflicted Catholicks; and by a short introduction addressed "To the noble gentleman, Sir N.N. knight".

At the end of the preface, and at the end of the book (which is marked as finished on 9 Aug. 1629) are these initials, "J.F.P. o. t. S.o.J. a. st. i. D.".
