Brief catalogue by [John] Whiston of Hearne’s library, including the MSS. of Dr. T. Smith, 18th century
Drawn up, apparently, after the death of Dr. Hilkiah Bedford, to whom Hearne bequeathed his books.
Prefixed, on fols. 1–10, are these articles:—
- (fol. 1) i. Part of a letter to Rawlinson from George Smith, urging his buying the collection for a hundred guineas, the price offered by a bookseller [Whiston?].
- (fol. 2) ii. Receipt drawn up by Rawlinson, and signed by Eliz. Bedford (witnessed by Eliz. Coles), for the sum of £105 paid to her as from George Smith, esq., by the hands of Dr. R. Rawlinson; 4 Nov. 1747.
- (fol. 3) iii. Declaration by G. Smith (witnessed by his son John) that though his name was used in the purchase as in the preceding receipt, yet that the purchase was made by Rawlinson, and the property in Hearne’s MSS. and printed books belongs to him; 13 Nov. 1747.
- (fol. 4) iv. Letter from the same to Rawlinson accompanying the declaration; trusts that Rawlinson will take care that after his decease the books thall run no hazard of being dispersed; will endeavour to prevail with Dr. Sharp to procure the "redletter’d book" out of "their" library. The "red" book is Jos. Howe’s Sermon preached before Charles I at Oxford. See Annals of Bodl. Libr., second edit., p. 235.
- (fols. 5, 6, 8-10) v. Memoranda by Rawlinson referring to some numbers of the books in the Catalogue.
- (fol. 7) vi. Notes of two promissory bills for £24 and £20, drawn by Rawlinson, 28 Jan. 1750/1.
