Petition to Thomas earl of Suffolk, lord high treasurer, from Robert Dackcombe, between 1614 and 1619

 Item
MS. Rawl. D. 908, fol. 12

  • Request
    this

Praying that some small allowance may be made for the repair, provision, and maintenance of Brownsea Castle [Dorset], for the protection of the inhabitants of Poole and others, who for want of such protection are robbed by pirates in Studland Bay.

The petitioner says that if the castle be neglected until the winter it will fall and perish. By a strange mistake he says that the castle has not been repaired since "1688" for 1588.

The date of the petition is between 1614–1619.

Fols. 5, 7, 8, 12, 14 and 16 are all noted with the distinctive mark of a cross crosslet ✠ at the top of the inner margin.
