His thoughts at present incapacitate him from being useful to himself or others; but if he can be still serviceable [as curate] to Altham, he will take care that his not being priest should be no trouble to him in administering the Sacrament, or doing anything requisite at Eastwick.
It is clear that the real reason for Howell’s declining the offer was his determination to refuse the oaths.
