The first of which letters he has endorsed with this note, "Letters to me from unknown hands when in Newgate".

  1. (fols. 9-26) i. One signed B.B., inclosing a long argument under the same signature, which, the writer says, "I believe, rightly consider'd, will make it appear that a wilful schism has been carried on for about 150 years".
  2. (fol. 27) ii. Signed F.G., dated London, 27 Sept. 1716, giving an account of an alleged dispute with "a professed dissenter", in which the latter retorts Howell's own principles with regard to the Revolution as applying to the Reformation.
  3. (fol. 29) iii. Signed A.P. [Andrew Pulton, the Jesuit?], suggesting that the authority of the Church of England remains with the successors of the bishops and clergy who were deprived by Q. Elizabeth, and that all that have departed from Rome are schismatics; Exon., 24 Sept.

Fol. 29 is written on the blank side of a postscript-leaf of a London newspaper printed by E. Berington and sold by J. Morphew.
