Account of the proceedings against Magdalen college, Oxford, 1687, with further papers 1687-1705, 1687-1705
By Thomas Smith, D.D.; copied from a transcript, which was lent to Rawlinson 7 Nov. 1752, by Dr. Joseph Smith, Provost of Queen’s college, Oxf., "communicated from his son, Joseph Smith, LL.D.".
Prefixed to the Account are copies of the following papers, which are also in Smith’s original MS.:—
- (fol. 24) i. "The last discourse I had with Mr. Henry Buckley", an unbeliever, on his death-bed, 18 Jan 1697/8.
- (fols. 25, 26) ii. Accounts of two conversations with the earl of Castlemaine in 1685, relative to the Church of Rome.
- (fol. 28) iii. Account of Smith's own application for the presidentship, and his interviews with bp. Parker.
The political narrative of affairs is continued to 2 Feb. 1688/9, and various notes of conversations, etc., extend to 1705, including discourse with lord Clarendon (fol. 61) on the report that his wife had said that the Queen of James II had miscarried (to which is added from another MS. a copy of a paper by N. Spinckes in 1702 on the same subject), and an account of a death-bed avowal of Arianism by the earl of Shaftesbury (fol. 64).

Custodial History
At the beginning was this note: "The gift of my cousin, John Smith of Burch (?) Hall, Durham, who transcribed part of it from his father’s MS., in Dr. Smith’s handwriting; the other part transcribed by me, Joseph Smith, 1746." Smith’s original MS. was bought for the Bodleian Library in 1888, and is now numbered MS. Smith 141.
