The preamble of the grant recites that Eliot, born of a noble family in England, had, although brought up amongst heretics, become an exile from his country for the sake of the Catholic faith; had served in the wars in Hungary; had suffered five years’ captivity in chains at Tunis; and had then served several Italian princes and the King of Spain at sea.

The arms are beautifully painted, with ornamental bordering quarterly, 1 and 4, argent, a cross gules; 2 and 3, azure, two dolphins, with anchors behind them; over all, a shield with his family arms, or, two bars gules, on the upper one a crescent argent, in chief three crescents gules; three crests, a cross gules, a griffin langued or, a dolphin with two anchors.
