Marg. note by Hearne [relating to addressee], "I believe Mr. Edw. Lisle, a gentleman-commoner of Edm. Hall, now (1707) a great Whigg, and intimate with the Earl of Pembroke."

The verses were printed as a broadside in 1681, and two copies are among Ant. à Wood’s books in the Bodleian, by whom also the following note is written at the foot of this copy: "White Kennet, a batler of S. Edm. ball of 3 years standing, the authour."

To this Hearne adds as follows: "This paper (as some others do, particularly his letter about Cornish) shows that Kennett bad good principles instill’d into him when young, his tutor (I think) being the ingenious and loyal Mr. Andrew Allam, however he has since (like his successor in the Vice-Principality of Edm. Hall, Mr. Tho. Milles) most shamefully deserted them.

"This paper was copied from the printed one amongst Mr. Wood’s papers in the Museum Ash., and the memorand. at the bottom of Kennett’s being author was made by Mr. Wood, who I suppose had the information from Mr. Allam with whom he was intimately acquainted."
