Expressing the most extravagant pleasure on the receipt of his letter of 17 Oct., 1672, confirming the intelligence of his having been created M.D. at Oxford, but complaining at the same time with some bitterness that he has received as yet no official notice and no acknowledgment of his gift [of his gold chain]; is delayed in publishing the second part of his Carmina by his desire to insert in it the particulars of the honour conferred on him;

Ghibbes’ previous letter, to which Compton had replied, is mentioned by Wood in his account of Ghibbes in his Fasti, under the year 1673. The chain is preserved in the Library.
