Oratio praevaricatoria apud Cantabrigienses, super quaestionibus, "i. Sine praevaricatore nil valent comitia; ii. Tenet insanabile multos scribendi cacoethes", late 17th century
Rawlinson notes on a fly-leaf, and on the first page, that "this was wrote by Dr. [James] Duport;" but it is not the Oratio mentioned in his life in the Dictionary of National Biography, (which is on the alchymical transmutation of metals) of which there is a copy in MS. Rawl. D. 228.
It is in Latin prose and Greek and English verse.
At the end is an address to the ladies, in which the theatre at Oxford is mentioned:— "And now let Oxford boast her theatre, / We have a belfrey does the business here".
And these lines dispose of Duport’s authorship, since he, when the theatre at Oxford was built, was Master of Magdalene college Cambridge, and Dean of Peterborough. The MS. is evidently its author’s autograph.
