Consisting of a collection of passages in Latin and English, in various styles of handwriting, with the initial letters in alphabetical order from A to Z. The initials themselves, very elegantly drawn, occupy the whole of the page opposite the passages to which they belong, and many of them contain grotesque figures.

In the lower margins of fols. 4, 5, are small alphabets with the name of William Laborer subscribed, and also at fols. 13, 15 with the name of Biehard Gethinge, but all appear to be written by Davies, whose signature is on fol. 2, and again with the date of March 21 on fol. 24b.

On a fly-leaf, 3b at the beginning, Thomas Rawlinson has written, "wants letter G. which some base hand has tome out", i.e. the leaf containing on one side the sentence for F. and on the other the initial G. For the letter Z. there is an epistle to one Zachary Bennington, recommending one Thomas Lammering to be secretary to Sir John Crompton, knt.

On fly-leaf 2b are three six-line stanzas of love-verses, beginning: "Long since, fair Lucinda, my passion did move".

Custodial History

On the first of the fly-leaves is the note, "E libris Roberti Wilkinson ex dono patris anno Dni 1660," altered by another hand to "1659, Oxon.", but this was evidently written in the eighteenth century, and appears to be intended for a copy of a note which appears on the first page of the book itself, a page formerly hidden by being pasted down, "Robert Wilkinson, his book, September 14 anno Domini 1661, ex dono patris". The name of "Thomas Whitmore" is scribbled several times on the same page; and that of James Gray "at Clappam", 5 Sept. 1673, on fol. 24b.

The book once belonged to Thomas Rawlinson, but does not appear in the sale catalogue of his MSS.
