At fol. 85 the date of 1678 occurs.

Samuel Chappell matriculated (according to Foster’s Alumni Oxonienses) as a servitor at Lincoln college in July, 1659.

The following note is prefixed by Hearne, "A.D. 1719. Simon Chapell, alias Grater, who wrote this book, was formerly of Lincoln coll. Oxford. He afterwards lead a strange obscure life, and was called Grater from his using a grater to grate his bread with. Sometimes he was called the old philosopher. He us’d to take his rounds from one college to another, and would seldom accept of above a halfpenny. He died in Oxford, and was buried by contribution of scholars in Magdalen parish church yard 7 or eight years since".
