Transcript of books I-VII of Clarendon’s History of the Rebellion, as originally written before the insertion of passages from his Life, 17th century
Pages 1–244 (rectius 243) and 265–270 (rectius 264–9) are in the handwriting of William Edgeman, Clarendon’s first secretary; the remainder in the handwriting of another secretary, probably ——— Shaw.
Dates are given in the margin at the beginning and end of most of the books, which are not the dates of the transcript, but of the composition of the work as given in the original MS. They are mistakenly referred to by the writer of this Catalogue as being the dates of the transcript, in the preface to vol. i of the edition of the History published in 1888, p. xi.
Pages are left blank in several places for the insertion of documents which have not subsequently been copied.
Pasted on a fly-leaf is the engraved border of the title (which has been cut out) to the translation of Biondi’s History of the wars of the houses of Lancaster and York, by H. Cary, earl of Monmouth, which was published in 1641. It contains small oval portraits of Charles I and his Queen, engraved by R. E[lstracke].

Olim inter codd. ducis de Chandos, 2578, et inde emptus a Rawlinson anno 1747, pretio £1 10s.
Prefixed to the volume are three letters to Rawlinson from the compiler of the sale catalogue of the Chandos library, dated at Whitchurch, 25 Aug., 5 Sept., and 8 Nov. 1747, with his (mistaken) opinion respecting the MS. as being in Clarendon’s own hand, and giving the history of the preparation of the Chandos catalogue. Extracts from these letters are printed in the Annals of the Bodl. Libr., second edition, 1890, pp. 227 and 250. There is also a letter from E. Umfreville to Rawlinson, expressing his desire to see the MS. and his opinion that Oldmixon was "a kn[ave]"; mentioning also that "Dr. Stack at Dr. Mead’s bought several" of Clarendon’s papers.
