The volumes, in the time of Lionel Cranfield, earl of Middlesex, and Richard lord Weston, afterwards earl of Portland, Lord High Treasurers, kept by John Brooke, comprehend the receipts from customs, impositions and subsidies, rents, sheriffs’ moneys, fines, loans, etc.; and the payments for salaries of the King’s household and servants, annuities, and payments made under writ of Privy Seal. The payments for salaries are attested by the signatures of the recipients or their representatives.
