Custodial History
Olim peculium Jos. Addison; postea inter codd. baronis Somers et Jos. Jekyll; denique, liber Edw. Umfreville.
On a page at the beginning (otherwise blank) is the following note: "A memorial given in by a Venetian ambassador to the Doge and Senate of Venice when he had finish’d his embassie. This came to my hands at Paris".
This note appears to be in the handwriting of Addison, from the following memorandum made by Rawlinson on another fly-leaf: —"Ex dono Edw. Umfreville armig. This was formerly in Ld. Somers’s collection, and a part of a very large one, bought by Mr. Addison in his travels, and purchased in Somers’s sale by R + R".
Most therefore, if not all, of the preceding Italian MSS. and many of those which follow belonged to Addison.
