Another volume of the French diaries of — Usigny [de Vrigny], 1 Apr 1706 to 14 Nov 1706 and 1707
Usigny [W.D. Macray. Now (2023) identified as Jacques Philippe de Lacombe de Vrigny, also known as James Philip de Vrigny], (without mention of his name) containing an account of his travels in Portugal and Spain, and of the operations of the English there, in 1706; he having been sent thither, as it seems, to the English ambassador.
The writer leaves London by coach for Falmouth, on 1 Apr. 1706, embarking on 20 Apr. for Lisbon, and lands at Plymouth on his return on 14 Nov. He gives good accounts of the various places he visits, and full particulars of the military movements. At the end he gives, on p. 167, remarks on the character of the Portuguese, extracted from a letter written by a person of quality long resident in Portugal to a friend appointed ambassador thither from some foreign Court; and at p. 181 a copy of a letter written by himself from London in 1707 "à Mr. de L’Et ... (sic), lieutenant general de cavalerie au service d’Hollande, en luy envoyant le relation precedente de la campagne de 1706 en Espagne". [W.D. Macray. It has now (2023) been established that this is a transcript of the first part of Lettre écrite de Londres à M. de ***. En lui envoyant une relation de la campagne de 1706 en Espagne (Cologne, 1707) [Dated, 29 Aug 1707]. Copies of this work in the Bodleian (Rawl. [octavo] 366), the British Library and the Saxon State and University Library, Dresden, all have the same correction in manuscript on page 17, and it is in De Vrigny's hand. From this and other internal evidence it is clear that de Vrigny was the author of this hitherto anonymous work. 'Mr. de L'Et ...' would appear to be the Dutch cavalry officer, Nicolaas de L’Estang (d. 1712).
On the first fly-leaf is the following note:— "Si quelquun apres ma mort juge a propos de faire imprimer la relation suivante qui ne contient rien que de tres veritable, je le supplie par tout ce qu’il a de plus cher de n’y faire rien ajouter n’y de retrancher; car ce n’a jamais este mon dessein qu’elle fust imprimée pendant ma vie. Fait a Londres, ce 29e Janvier, 1711/12" [W.D. Macray. The correct date is in fact 1710/11.]
