Original returns made from many parishes in Devonshire to printed forms of enquiry issued in 1688 by commissioners appointed by the Court of Exchequer, as to fines and distresses levied for recusancy, for the exercise of religion, or for not receiving the Sacrament, 29 Sep 1677 to Sep 1688
The complaints of many of the persons fined are included, with particulars of distresses; and about 90 affidavits from churchwardens and parish constables, chiefly in the city of Exeter, that there had been no proceedings taken during their time of holding office in their respective parishes.
The commissioners were Hugh Westlake, Nich. Boson, Nath. Tyderleigh, Tho. Bampfield, Tho. Jefford, Jo. Southcote, Thos. Spurway, G. Chudleigh, Rich. Burthogge, Hen. Watts.
At the end are two similar returns relative to Ratcliff and Colchester, and a petition to Will. III from Nicholas Stevens for the post of Customer at Plymouth in 1689.
