Original copies by Alex. Cruden (the compiler of the Concordance to the Holy Bible) of letters written by him to the Earl of Derby, from Crown Street in Soho, Halnaker, and Liverpool, in Jul–Oct 1729, remonstrating against his dismissal from the Earl's service (in which he had been engaged, through Mr. Maddox, chaplain to the Bishop of Chichester, as a reader or companion), on account of his inability to read French correctly, 18th century
The letters are written in a wild rambling manner, partly in French. Cruden ascribes his dismissal to the influence of one Mr. Clayton, a high-churchman in the Earl's household, who regarded Cruden as "a rank Presbyterian."
