Letters (primarily typescript copies with explanatory notes written in 1998 and 2007) from Margaret and Neil Bax to each other during periods apart comprising:

  1. Letters from Margaret to Neil while she was a visiting senior lecturer at the University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, Mar-Aug 1962, with explanatory note written in 1998 in relation to two of the letters.
  2. Letters from Neil to Margaret while she was a Visiting Professor at Northwestern University in the USA and he carried out work assignments in Sierra Leone and Ghana (Mar-May 1969) and Sierra Leone (Oct 1969-Nov 1970). With postcards of Las Palmas and Ghana.
  3. Letters between Margaret and Neil while she was a Research Fellow at Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge, and he was working in Sierra Leone, with related correspondence with the British High Commission, Freetown, Sep-Oct 1970.
  4. Letters between Margaret and Neil while she was in Cambridge and then Ghana and he was in Ghana and Sierra Leone, Jan-Sep 1971, with photographs of Neil.
  5. Letters from Neil to Margaret while he was in Ghana and she was in Cambridge, 1972-1974.
  6. Eyewitness accounts of coups: letter from Mary Hartley describing the military coup in Ghana in March 1966, letter from Neil describing the unsuccessful military coup in Sierra Leone in March 1971 and description by Margaret of the military coup in Ghana on 4 June 1979.

With printed ephemera from Sierra Leone (including order of service for Memorial Service for Winston Churchill in St George's Cathedral, Freetown, 30 Jan 1965) and Ghana, 1959-c.2008, Neil Bax's certificate of registration for Sierra Leone, 1970, and three photographs of Neil Bax and a room interior, c.1970.
