Journal of Lieutenant George Baker, 1822-1823
A journal in three notebooks, the last one incomplete, written by the grandfather of Dr C.J. Baker while making his journey to England on two years' sick leave from Ceylon (Sri Lanka), where he had been serving in the army. This journal describes the conditions of travel by sea at that time, the journey up the Red Sea in an Arab sailing boat, his visit to, and observations of, the Pyramids, and periods of quarantine in Alexandria and in the Lazaretto in Malta because of bubonic plague having been brought on to the ship by which they were sailing from Alexandria.
