This section contains material relating to Welensky's activities outside politics, as a farmer and businessman. In trying to look after his own financial affairs, he was hampered, like many Rhodesians, by exchange controls in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Zambia, South Africa, and the United Kingdom (Rhodesia (Zimbabwe)'s ironically instituted by his own government), by sanctions, and by taxation. Thus, he sold a house in Zambia in the autumn of 1965 but had the money blocked there for the duration of the Unilateral Declaration of Independence. Shares of multi-national companies bought through different exchanges and on different registers were, of course, subject to different sets of restrictions. Both the Rhodesian and Zimbabwe governments sought to exert controls over the foreign shares of residents or former residents, with a propensity to change the rules if such controls were challenged at law in other jurisdictions. The conveyancing of his property at the Cape produced an example of a declaration under the Group Areas legislation.
