Welensky briefly, and unsuccessfully, returned to active politics in the autumn of 1964 but retired finally at the end of that year. He remained a behind-the-scenes figure in various of the negotiations and political campaigns that mark the era of Unilateral Declaration of Independence. His speeches, articles, and statements indicated his views at the time, but they should be read in conjunction with his correspondence. Terminology is a problem. Legally, it was Southern Rhodesia that received its independence as Zimbabwe in 1980, but the Southern Rhodesian Government (and its de facto, if 'illegal', successors) adopted the description Rhodesia from 1965 and Zimbabwe Rhodesia in 1979. It is therefore difficult to be consistent. Most of the material in this section was shipped to England in 1981 and brought to Rhodes House Library in 1992. Some files, mainly from 1964 to 1966, had, however, already undertaken the journey as part of the main accession of Welensky Papers in 1977/1978.
