Arrangement
This section includes letters of support and congratulation, opposition and excoriation, appeals for assistance and employment, letters of recommendation and introduction, and such like material. A sample of the (carefully filed) letters from individuals deemed 'cranks' has been retained, as has a quantity of the largely ephemeral letters from seekers after autographs and signed photographs. Dealing with these consumed the time of the private office and private secretaries, as did more obviously important matters, but good manners and good public relations demanded that reasonable requests be met. The classification of 'crank' was used relatively infrequently. The index includes only the more significant correspondents.
Running files have been rationalised into the sequences MSS. Welensky Papers 566/3-567/6 and 568/1-571/2. See also MSS. Welensky Papers 25/3 for further material relating to employment at the Chilanga cement works and MSS. Welensky Papers 330/1-331/2 for employment on Rhodesia Railways. The 'personal' files at MSS. Welensky Papers 584/2 and after also contain requests for assistance and employment, whereas the specific files maintained for Welensky as Minister of Transport cease on his becoming Prime Minister. In the latter part of 1953, Welensky appears to have been keeping correspondence about jobs in files in Broken Hill (Kabwe), Lusaka, and Salisbury (Harare). These have been restored to the main sequence. There is some overlap with immigration material, the rest of which will be found at MSS. Welensky Papers 58/2-59/2 and 248/2-249/2.
