Welensky's speeches cover many subjects. This might be expected of a Prime Minister, but it was also the case from 1953 to 1956 when, as befitted his position as de facto deputy and heir presumptive to Lord Malvern, he was allowed to speak generally and widely on government policy - a privilege denied his other colleagues. Texts of speeches or material used in them may be found in several other parts of these papers. The immediately preceding sections have dealt with the invitations and visits that provided the occasion of many of the speeches. Sometimes, a copy of the speech had been filed there; on other occasions, material was provided to assist in a speech's composition. Such material is not limited to MSS. Welensky Papers 453/2-456/2.

Speeches and broadcast speeches forming part of an election or referendum campaign will be found in sections dealing with those topics (e.g. MSS. Welensky Papers 64/7-91/1 and 457/1-474/1). Speeches made to the (United) Federal Party will frequently be included in the relevant party files (MSS. Welensky Papers 474/2-504/7 and 523/1-529/11). Those made to the Federal Assembly will infrequently be found on Welensky's sessional and parliamentary files (MSS. Welensky Papers 189/1-192/1). Press releases of speeches, wherever made and to whatever audience, were issued by the Federal Government's information services (see MSS. Welensky Papers 288/1-291/2). Copies of many broadcast speeches will be found either there or in the files relating to broadcasts (MSS. Welensky Papers 295/1-296/4), or both. Letters of congratulation and support arising from speeches and broadcasts are at MSS. Welensky Papers 552/8-558/6. Speeches, whether in this section or elsewhere, have not been indexed.

The 'material' listed includes quotations, statistics, press cuttings and articles, manifestos, briefing notes sent by those inviting Welensky, and related correspondence. The various series of running files Minister of Transport 126, PM (old series) 58 and 70, and PM (new series) 104 are now represented by 453/2-456/2. Similar material will be found in the 'Visits' and 'Tours' sections (particularly 396/3-4, 397/4, and 418/6-7) and the 'Private Office/ Private Secretary' section (544/1-545/9), as well as amongst the briefing material for constitutional discussions and election campaigns (e.g. 468/6).
